Microsoft is entering the process of ending support for Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions in the Edge browser.
As a result, older ad-blocking extensions such as uBlock Origin will be gradually disabled by default. The Verge reported on Aug. 7 that Microsoft decided to sequentially end support for remaining MV2 extensions starting this month.
The move follows the same trend as Google Chrome, which ended MV2 support earlier this year. Microsoft said only 58 MV2 extensions have meaningful usage in the Edge add-ons store, and of those, three are not available on the newer MV3 platform.
Users of existing MV2 extensions will need to choose other alternatives. uBlock Origin users can move to uBlock Origin Lite. Opera continues to support existing MV2 extensions and said it will maintain that support as long as it is technically reasonable. Another option is switching to Firefox.
Microsoft will progressively disable MV2 extensions as the default over the coming months. It plans to notify users in advance and, where possible, guide them to move to recommended MV3 versions.
