Minnesota has banned the operation of cryptocurrency kiosks. Cointelegraph reported on Aug. 1 local time that a bill SF 3868 signed by Governor Tim Walz (팀 월즈) on May 5 has officially taken effect.
Under the law, all cryptocurrency ATM operators in Minnesota may not install, operate, maintain or keep crypto kiosks available for use. Machines already installed must be deactivated by Aug. 1, and those located where the public can see or access them must be removed by Dec. 31.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce said residents lost about $1 million to cryptocurrency ATM-related scams from 2023 to 2025. Authorities explained that such scams mainly targeted older people and often used false emergency situations to pressure victims into making transfers.
Minnesota's move also aligns with a broader trend of tougher regulation in other states. Tennessee also banned the machines outright from July 1, and Georgia implemented a law the same day that includes transaction limits and other restrictions. Similar regulatory bills are being pursued in Delaware and New Jersey.
