[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong] OpenAI has named its next-generation AI model tier, GPT-5.6, as Sol, Terra and Luna, stirring discussion in an unexpected place. The artificial intelligence industry focused on performance and pricing strategy, but the cryptocurrency community posted a range of reactions, saying the names evoke Solana and Terra-Luna.
On June 26 local time, blockchain outlet U.Today reported that OpenAI recently unveiled its next-generation GPT-5.6 model family. But right after the announcement, the cryptocurrency community focused on the names before the model performance.
The main reason was the names. Sol matches the common shorthand for the major blockchain project Solana, while Terra and Luna recall the Terra ecosystem that collapsed in 2022 and left losses worth tens of billions of dollars in the cryptocurrency market. With Terra-Luna remaining one of the biggest collapse cases in crypto market history, reactions continued that the names carry symbolism beyond simple naming.
The cryptocurrency community exchanged various jokes on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Solana’s official account reacted by calling OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) "Sam Altcoinman," and one user wrote, "Sol, Terra, Luna ... they used the name of the last crypto rug pull as model names." Another user wrote, "Who said Terra-Luna," reacting with surprise.
OpenAI, meanwhile, stressed the product structure. OpenAI built the GPT-5.6 family into three tiers for corporate customers. The top-tier model, GPT-5.6 Sol, is a flagship that offers one-step improved performance over the existing GPT-5.5.
GPT-5.6 Terra was positioned as a general business model. OpenAI explained it provides performance similar to GPT-5.5 at about half the cost.
The cheapest model, GPT-5.6 Luna, targets high-volume inference work. The company introduced Luna as a model that offers high efficiency at the lowest cost.
The lineup has not yet been released to the general public. It is currently offered on a limited basis to some trusted partners using Codex and the API, and general users cannot use it for the time being.
The case shows that even the same announcement can be received very differently depending on the industry. OpenAI has newly reorganised its enterprise AI model lineup, but the cryptocurrency community reacted first to the names that evoke Solana and Terra-Luna, rather than performance.
With memories of the Terra-Luna collapse still strongly lingering in the market, the new GPT-5.6 model names are drawing unexpected attention in the cryptocurrency community beyond the AI industry announcement.
