South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said on Wednesday it selected 10 climate technology demonstration projects with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

The two organisations launched the Climate Technology Advancement Fund (CTAF) under an administrative agreement signed in April. The projects were proposed by GGGI country offices based on demand from local governments and institutions. After reviewing factors including technological merit, policy fit and scalability, they selected 3 local demonstrations and 7 pre-planning tasks.

The 3 local demonstrations are the Cambodia Smart Grid Project, which will digitalise aging power grids using artificial intelligence-based smart grid technology; the Jordan Smart Farm Project using AI-based aquaponics; and the Paraguay climate risk and renewable energy mapping project, which will analyse flood and drought risks and renewable energy sites using satellite imagery. They are set to begin in the second half of the year.

The 7 pre-planning tasks include the Mongolia heating facility energy reduction project, which will measure carbon reduction effects using AI-MRV technology, and the Philippines data centre energy efficiency project applying AI accelerator technology. The organisations plan to link them to local demonstrations after 2027.

GGGI Director-General Sang-hyup Kim (김상협) said, "We will work to ensure the Climate Technology Advancement Fund develops into a specialised global fund for climate technology demonstrations and can become a cooperation model with participation by more countries and institutions."

Eun-young Lee (이은영), director general for Research Outcome and Innovation at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "We will actively support efforts from local demonstrations through commercialisation so that South Korea's public climate technologies can become practical solutions on the ground in the global response to climate change."
