Venture investor Tim Draper (팀 드레이퍼) argued that traditional finance, not bitcoin, would be hit first by the threat from quantum computers.
On June 9 (local time), blockchain media outlet U.Today reported that Draper said his bitcoin holdings are safer than U.S. dollars kept in traditional banks.
Draper said quantum computers would hack banks before they touch blockchain. He said that even if the bitcoin network is attacked, it could carry out a hard fork to return to the last safe block. Such a step would require broad consensus among miners and node operators, so the hurdle for implementation is not low.
A technical debate continues over the risk quantum computers could pose to bitcoin. In a white paper in March 2026, Google Quantum AI suggested the number of physical qubits needed to break ECDSA-256 could be fewer than 500,000. That is 20 times lower than a 2019 estimate. A proposal for BIP 360 and a "Pay to Merkle Root" proposal have also been floated to create a quantum-resistant address format.
Draper also reiterated his long-term optimism on bitcoin. He said he took interest when bitcoin was priced around $4, but started mining only when it was $30 because of issues with a hardware manufacturer. He later lost all his holdings in the Mt. Gox collapse, but in 2014 bought back about 30,000 bitcoins seized and sold at a U.S. federal marshal auction at about $632 per coin.
Draper has since repeatedly argued that bitcoin could replace the U.S. dollar. He presented a future in which taxes are handled through smart contracts and corporate finance also runs on a bitcoin basis. In 2018, he first forecast bitcoin would reach $250,000, with the target date then set for 2022. After the 2022 bear market and the collapse of FTX, he pushed the forecast date back to 2025, and in early 2026 again argued bitcoin would reach $250,000 within the next 18 months.
Market views on the quantum threat remain divided. Draper said his bitcoin is safer and argued blockchain can be rolled back to the last safe block. Whether the network can actually take such an extreme step remains a separate question. Separately from bitcoin price forecasts, how concrete discussions become on quantum-resistant upgrades is expected to be a key point to watch.
