[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Video-generation artificial intelligence (AI) company Runway unveiled "Runway MCP," which lets users use its video creation features directly inside external chat-based AI such as ChatGPT and Claude.

On May 28 (local time), online media outlet Gigazine reported that users can create video settings through conversation within a chat-based AI and connect entered images directly to video generation.

The main point of the announcement is that Runway's functions have expanded beyond its own platform. MCP is a method that connects AI and external services, allowing other services' functions to be called within a chat interface. Runway has brought its image and video generation features into external AI environments such as ChatGPT through this.

Runway explained that when integrated with ChatGPT, users can set video style and scene composition while talking with the AI, then proceed straight to video generation. It also said users can use images entered during the chat to immediately create videos with Runway's video generation model. Text conversation and visual input are linked in a single workflow.

The actual process is relatively simple. Users search for Runway in the "Apps" menu on the ChatGPT sidebar, select connect, and log in with a Runway account. They can then call Runway functions directly within ChatGPT to carry out video generation tasks.

The integration is not limited to ChatGPT. Runway said Runway MCP works not only in ChatGPT but also in various chat-based AIs and AI agents that support MCP. This means Runway functions can be called in other AI environments such as Claude and Cursor.

The change aligns with a shift in competition among generative AI services from single-model performance to workflow connectivity. Runway moved beyond a standalone video generation service and chose to bring its functions into chat interfaces where users already spend time.

This could also change how videos are generated. An analysis said that instead of moving to a separate platform to enter prompts, a flow in which users organize ideas during a chat, attach reference images and immediately proceed to video generation could become common.

Still, the scope of use is expected to vary depending on whether MCP is supported. Runway explained it can be used in chat-based AIs and AI agents that support MCP, and video generation features are likely to become more accessible as the number of supported platforms increases.
