Display materials company SK Materials JNC said on Monday it signed a memorandum of understanding with SN Display to build a mass-production system for perovskite nanocrystal materials. Perovskite is a material with a fine crystal structure that emits light and is moving from research and development to commercialisation. The two companies agreed to jointly lay the groundwork for mass production.
SN Display is a display materials startup founded by Seoul National University professor Tae-Woo Lee (이태우). The company said it has technology to mass-synthesise perovskite nanocrystal materials at high efficiency. Related research results were published in academic journals Nature and Science. It also received a CES 2026 Innovation Award.
Perovskite emissive materials have high colour purity and luminous efficiency that meet BT.2020, a next-generation colour standard. BT.2020 is an international standard for ultra-high-definition video that supports a wider colour gamut than existing HDTV. For this reason, it is being discussed as a display material that follows organic light-emitting diodes and quantum dots. Its applications range from colour conversion films to self-emissive displays.
The agreement was pursued to combine the strengths of the two companies. SN Display has core synthesis technology for perovskite emissive materials. SK Materials JNC has capabilities in material synthesis, mass production and quality control. The companies plan to work together to raise the research-stage material to a level that can be used in the display industry.
SK Materials JNC has secured integrated capabilities in OLED materials, including boron-based blue dopants, spanning synthesis, production, device evaluation and quality control. JNC will take charge of synthesis and manufacturing of SN Display materials. The company said it will also support process optimisation and a quality assurance system to drive commercialisation.
Ha Jung-hwan (하정환), CEO of SK Materials JNC, said, "By combining SN Display's excellent core perovskite technology with our synthesis and mass-production capabilities, we will dramatically bring forward the commercialisation of next-generation display materials." He said, "Based on the strengths of both companies, we will enhance technological competitiveness and create new growth opportunities in the display materials market."
Lee Tae-woo (이태우), CEO of SN Display, said, "This agreement is an important opportunity to expand production and supply capabilities based on the perovskite material technology we have accumulated." He said, "Through cooperation with SK Materials JNC, we will strengthen a stable supply base of high-quality materials and push ahead with commercialisation of display application products."
