SoftBank is discussing plans with Nvidia and Foxconn to produce AI servers in Japan, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing Nikkei.
SoftBank aims to assemble servers using externally procured parts, build a production system before 2030 and eventually internalise the entire manufacturing process, the report said.
SoftBank will focus on high-performance servers that can run high-performance GPUs at high speed.
The project is part of SoftBank's medium-term management plan and could be announced as early as Monday, Nikkei reported.
The AI server development follows SoftBank Group's investments of more than $30 billion in OpenAI so far to secure about an 11 percent stake. SoftBank has been betting that OpenAI will emerge as a winner in the race to develop large language models.
