A small solo bitcoin miner with a hashrate of 230 terahash per second (TH/s) has drawn attention after beating odds of about 1 in 28,000 per day to mine block 943,411 and pocket about $210,000 in rewards.
On April 5 (local time), blockchain media outlet The Block Crypto reported the miner received a total of 3.139 BTC, combining a 3.125 BTC block subsidy and 0.014 BTC in transaction fees. The fee income was worth $937, and the equipment was connected to solo mining pool solo.ckpool.org, where the individual miner takes most of the reward.
CKpool developer Con Kolivas said the miner found CKpool's 312th solo block with about 230 TH. Equipment of that size has about a 1 in 28,000 chance per day of finding a block.
Based on blockchain explorer mempool.space, the rig's computing power is about 0.00002 percent of the total bitcoin hashrate estimated at about 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s) on April 2. It is closer in scale to a small bundle of home, on-demand application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) rigs run in one place than to short-term rented hashpower.
The win is CKpool's first solo mining success in 33 days since Feb. 28. Solo mining tracking platform Bennet said solo pools found 20 bitcoin blocks over the past 12 months, with total rewards of 62.96 BTC. The average interval was 18.7 days and the longest gap was 58 days.
Similar cases have continued. In December last year, a miner with about 270 TH received a reward worth $284,633 at block 927,474. The previous month, a 6 TH miner took a reward worth $265,000. In September last year, 200 TH equipment also secured a reward worth $350,000 at block 913,593. At the end of February, a solo miner who投入ed 1 petahash per second (PH/s) of rented hashpower received a $200,000 reward.
By contrast, large mining companies have been cashing in bitcoin holdings in the first quarter. Riot Platforms secured $289.5 million by selling 3,778 BTC and held 15,680 BTC at the end of the quarter. Mara Holdings sold about 15,133 BTC for $1.1 billion from March 4 to 25 to repurchase convertible bonds.
