LG Electronics appointed outside director Soo-jin Kang (강수진) as its first board chair drawn from outside directors. LG Electronics said its board met on March 23 and approved Kang as chair and the appointment of chief executive officer Jae-cheol Ryu (류재철) as sole representative director. This is the first time an outside director has taken the board chair role.

New chair Kang is a Fair Trade and legal expert who is serving as a professor at Korea University Law School. She joined LG Electronics' board in 2021 and has served on the internal transactions committee, audit committee and ESG committee. The company said appointing a chair from outside directors is intended to raise the board's independence and transparency and advance corporate governance.

With the shift, LG Electronics' board will be separated from management and structured to review key agenda items and make decisions independently. Having an outside director, rather than management, serve as chair is expected to strengthen the management oversight function.

Ryu was appointed as sole representative director, reinforcing a responsible management system. Ryu's policy is to exercise formal voting rights on the company's key agenda items as a member of management and the board, and to work to raise corporate value.
