If you bought cryptocurrencies on the day U.S. President Donald Trump was sworn in again, how much would they be worth now? After Trump's second inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025 (local time), major coins have moved sharply lower, and comparisons of returns since just after the inauguration have drawn attention.
On Feb. 27, blockchain outlet The Crypto Basic cited data from cryptocurrency commentator Henry (Henry) and highlighted a comparison of the performance of major cryptocurrencies after Trump's second inauguration.
On inauguration day, bitcoin traded at $101,100, ether at $3,208 and XRP at $2.95. They have since fallen to around $68,400 for bitcoin, $2,000 for ether and $1.37 for XRP. Market capitalisation has also shrunk, with bitcoin falling to $1.33 trillion from about $2 trillion, ether to $240 billion from $383 billion, and XRP halving to $85 billion from $170 billion.
Based on those prices, a $10,000 investment made on inauguration day would now be worth much less. XRP fell about 53 percent, cutting $10,000 to around $4,700. Bitcoin fell about 34 percent to about $6,600, while ether fell about 38 percent to about $6,200. Of the three cryptocurrencies, XRP posted the biggest drop.
Even so, a rebound scenario is still being discussed. If regulatory clarity in the United States is secured, including through the CLARITY bill, there are forecasts that XRP could recover to a $5 to $10 range. Some analysts also say there could be greater upside potential.
At a recent forum, Trump's second son Eric Trump (에릭 트럼프) again mentioned a forecast that bitcoin could reach $1 million over the long term. If bitcoin rises from around $68,400 now to $1 million as assumed, the value of 0.0989 BTC bought for $10,000 on inauguration day could grow to about $98,900.
Still, the weakness since the inauguration is also being linked to shaken investor sentiment amid macro factors including tariff policy and geopolitical conflict. The "$10,000 investment" benchmark based on inauguration day remains in loss territory for all three assets. Caution is also needed over short-term price moves, as more volatile altcoins can see both larger declines and bigger rebounds.
If you invested $20,000 when Trump took office, you would have: BTC → $12,100 ETH → $9,020 XRP → $8,360 LINK → $7,450 SOL → $5,860 DOGE → $4,600 ADA → $4,680 AVAX → $4,240 SEI → $4,010 DOT → $3,540 ENA → $2,160 APT → $1,740 TRUMP → $1,010 MELANIA → $200
