[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said the company has signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (Department of War, DoW) to introduce its AI models into military networks, TechCrunch reported on Feb. 28 (local time).
The deal came just after President Donald Trump announced that rival Anthropic products could not be used at the Defense Department. OpenAI disclosed the details of the agreement on its official blog.
Anthropic argued for limits on autonomous weapon systems and large-scale surveillance, but Trump opposed that and instructed the Department of War to stop using Anthropic products. OpenAI, meanwhile, stressed that while cooperating with the department it included in the contract principles of a "ban on large-scale surveillance" and "weapons use under human responsibility". Altman said, "We will build technical safeguards to prevent the misuse of AI, and this is also what the government wanted." OpenAI said its defense contract meets the ethical standards sought by Anthropic and urged other AI companies to join.
