Soneium, a blockchain co-developed by Sony and Startale, is set to launch IP tokenisation projects in the music and character sectors this year and expand their scale next year.

Soneium’s strategy is to validate funding and settlement structures through small and mid-sized projects before moving to high-budget games or animated films.

Yuji Kumagai (유지 쿠마가이), head of the Soneium protocol, said in an interview with Axelist Research, "We will first build success cases starting with small and mid-sized projects without taking on major risks."

The company said Soneium believes IP tokenisation will help expand funding channels for creators.

Because funding is invested upfront in content production while revenue comes later, it plans to link investors to project revenue or business cash flow to offer options beyond existing production investment and loans.

Kumagai said it is "about providing creators with opportunities to raise funds on a more global scale when they create new works."

In South Korea, it will work with DayOneDream and WAVIST. DayOneDream operates K-content businesses including music production and publishing, artist IP and performances. WAVIST provides a tokenisation platform that uses that business base to structure performance and content cash flow into investment products and supports investor matching and post-issuance management.

Kumagai said, "Technology is only one tool, and we can use other technologies as well," adding, "The ultimate goal is to empower creators."
