[Digital Today intern reporter Seung-a Yoo] Ripple (XRP) is working with Stripe-owned wallet infrastructure company Privy to introduce artificial intelligence-based payments and embedded wallet functions on the XRP Ledger (XRPL).

U.Today, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Oct. 13 that the integration will allow developers to build payment apps using XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) without users having to manage private keys themselves.

Using Privy's programmable wallet technology, developers can build and manage XRPL-based wallets and implement a structure in which users approve transactions. The collaboration focuses on "agentic commerce," in which AI agents hold funds and autonomously carry out transactions and payments.

One of the core technologies is an open payments protocol called x402, which streamlines automated payments between software. Using it, AI agents can buy digital services such as computing resources, API access and AI model inference without separate manual approvals. For example, an AI agent can purchase a data access service, pay in XRP or RLUSD and then receive the data. Ripple sees this as enabling XRPL to be used as a payment network for machine-to-machine commerce.

Ripple said payments handled by AI agents on XRPL total about 13 million transactions, accounting for about 25 percent of overall network activity. J. Ayo Akinyele (J. 아요 아키니엘레), head of engineering at RippleX, said earlier this month that automated transactions rose to about 13 million in October from about 1 million in July.

The increase in transaction count does not necessarily mean payment volumes are expanding. Most machine-to-machine payments currently involve relatively small cryptocurrency transactions.

The collaboration expands Ripple's AI commerce strategy. Ripple unveiled an AI starter kit in June that lets developers build autonomous payment apps using XRP, RLUSD and the x402 protocol. Privy plans to add transaction policy controls and a fee sponsorship function. Ripple expects the integration to reduce the burden on developers implementing automated payment services and broaden XRPL use beyond existing cryptocurrency payments.
