OpenAI will add visual display ads next to ChatGPT image generation results in the United States from late October. TechCrunch reported on Oct. 5 that the ads will begin with products and services from an initial group of test advertisers. The ads will be clearly labeled and will not affect ChatGPT responses.

OpenAI introduced ads early this year to support free and low-cost subscription plans and expanded them to India in August. It now plans to broaden ad placements to the image generation experience to attract online advertisers seeking to reach consumers with visual images.

If the ad product expands globally, advertisers could target ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users. TechCrunch reported that ads next to image generation results could hurt the user experience and may also push some users toward paid subscriptions without ads.

OpenAI also expanded its ad measurement tools and partner ecosystem. Click attribution analysis partners include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Lockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin.

OpenAI is also supporting local-based ad experiments with House, Measured and WorkMagic. It is developing a brand suitability assessment pilot with support from DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers better understand the ChatGPT ad environment.
