[Digital Today reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened an investigation into AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic over potential product risks. CNBC reported on Sept. 30 local time that the probe is being conducted to examine the risks AI products could cause.

CNBC reported that an FTC spokesperson confirmed the investigation to the network but did not name other companies besides OpenAI and Anthropic. The New York Post first reported the investigation.

OpenAI and Anthropic are embroiled in controversy over practices related to safety measures.

The trend appears to have become more pronounced after industry researchers warned that the two companies' AI models could cause catastrophic damage.

Earlier this month, Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei urged slowing the pace of performance improvements in cutting-edge models and strengthening government oversight. He also put forward a three-step proposal to regulate development speed without sacrificing commercial advantages or U.S. leadership in AI.
