Attention is focusing on whether Apple’s foldable "iPhone Duo" can deliver a screen experience close to the iPad mini.

On Sept. 22, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that the iPhone Duo offers a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded. That is smaller than the 8.3-inch iPad mini, but the overall form and usage context were compared as being at a similar level.

The key is the perceived difference in the display rather than the size difference. The iPhone Duo was introduced as a "2-in-1" device that can be used like a regular iPhone on the outside and, when unfolded, offers usability similar to the iPad mini. The outlet described the iPhone Duo as a "true 2-in-1 form factor device".

By appearance alone, the iPad mini is bigger. By Apple’s figures, the iPhone Duo is 4.64 inches tall and 6.48 inches wide. The iPad mini is 5.3 inches tall and 7.69 inches wide. The difference is clear in the numbers, but the gap in screen size is not as large as the gap in exterior dimensions because the iPhone Duo’s bezel is much thinner.

The actual display measures 7.6 inches on the iPhone Duo and 8.3 inches on the iPad mini. 9to5Mac noted that "the difference in screen size is not as pronounced as you might think." That means the usable screen area comes close to the iPad mini despite the folding structure.

Comparison material was also presented. Adrian Santos posted a video on X placing the two devices side by side, and Dillon McDonald used a life-size printout of the iPhone Duo to compare its proportions with the existing iPad mini. It was also mentioned that for users accustomed to the 7.9-inch screen size of past iPad mini models, the iPhone Duo could feel like a closer alternative.

The comparison is expected to serve as a gauge of whether the iPhone Duo is not just a folding iPhone but can also absorb some demand for small tablets. That is because maintaining the iPhone experience on the outer screen and providing a workspace close to the iPad mini on the inner screen could be key to the product’s competitiveness.

The official release timing for the iPhone Duo is also not far off. As a result, market attention is expected to focus less on absolute screen size and more on how far it can deliver iPad mini-level usability when unfolded.
