[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] OpenAI and Anthropic on Sept. 22 (local time) each unveiled new AI models with lower costs. The move responds to customer demand to cut AI spending and is also aimed at keeping cheaper open-weight models in check.
OpenAI added GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to the GPT-6 series. GPT-6 Sol is one tier below Astra and targets complex tasks such as coding. GPT-6 Luna focuses on tasks such as information extraction and document summarisation. For both models, API prices are 50 percent lower than the GPT-5.6 promotion level.
Anthropic announced Claude Opus 5.5, the latest model in the Claude 5.5 line. It is a version with improved token efficiency and has operating costs about 40 percent lower than Opus 5.
Diane Penn (다이앤 펜), Anthropic head of product management, research and labs, said, "We are improving response efficiency so it can respond with fewer tokens depending on the effort setting."
