Song Kyung-hee (송경희), chair of the Personal Information Protection Commission, will meet the heads of the country’s three mobile carriers to discuss measures to protect personal information in the AI era and to issue a joint declaration.

The commission said on Sept. 22 that Song will hold a policy communication meeting at 3 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, with the chief executives of the three carriers, including Jae-heon Jeong (정재헌), CEO of SK Telecom, Yoon-young Park (박윤영), CEO of KT, and Beom-sik Hong (홍범식), CEO of LG Uplus.

The commission will brief the three carriers on key provisions of the revised Personal Information Protection Act, which took effect on Sept. 11, and urge compliance. The revised law allows a penalty of up to 10 percent of total revenue for companies that cause large-scale personal data leaks affecting more than 10,000,000 people through repeated violations or intentional acts or gross negligence. A system was also introduced under which companies that made preventive investments to protect personal data can receive a reduction of up to 40 percent in the base amount used to calculate penalties.

The commission and the three carriers plan to sign and release a joint declaration saying they will work together to protect personal information. They will then hold a closed-door discussion to share views related to the revised law and hear requests from the telecommunications industry.
