[DigitalToday reporter Jae-won Choi (최재원)] Meta's AI app Muse has exceeded ChatGPT's early mobile-app performance in the North American market after its launch. It has also been suggested that Meta's existing services such as Facebook and Instagram could help attract users.

On Sept. 21 local time, TechCrunch reported that app analytics firm Apptopia released the results of a comparison of downloads and daily active users (DAU) for Muse and ChatGPT over the first 12 days after launch. Because the two apps differed in launch regions and operating systems, downloads were compared only among iOS users in the United States and Canada.

By that measure, Muse logged 1.8 million downloads, ahead of ChatGPT's 1.3 million over the same period. Muse's total installs across platforms were estimated at 2.8 million over 12 days after launch. It also rose from No. 2 to No. 1 in the overall rankings on the U.S. Apple App Store shortly after launch.

A gap also emerged in DAU, which indicates how many people actually use the app. On U.S. mobile apps, Muse had 642,000 DAU, more than ChatGPT's 231,000 at the same point after its launch. Even comparing only iOS, taking into account that Muse supports both iOS and Android, Muse recorded 359,000, ahead of ChatGPT.

All figures, however, are Apptopia estimates, not Meta's internal data. Meta has not disclosed official download and user figures for Muse. It is also difficult to judge long-term user retention or market competitiveness based only on early install performance.

Muse can connect with Facebook and Instagram and also works on WhatsApp. Apptopia said more than 95 percent of Muse users use Facebook, and 63 percent use Instagram. It has not been confirmed how much Meta's cross-promotion contributed to actual downloads.
