LG Energy Solution has joined Nvidia's next-generation AI factory ecosystem as a battery energy storage system (BESS) partner.

LG Energy Solution said on Sept. 22 it was selected as a BESS company for Nvidia's DSX Ready programme, which Nvidia introduced for the first time. Three BESS partners were selected globally, and LG Energy Solution is the only South Korean battery company among them.

DSX Ready is a qualification programme for products and solutions that meet the design, build and operation requirements needed for Nvidia's AI factory platform.

LG Energy Solution met the requirements with its JF2 AC Link, based on high-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The product uses a modular design so equipment can be expanded flexibly as data centres scale up.

It also applies power control functions. It supports AI load levelling to ease loads through charging and discharging when AI server power use changes sharply, and voltage support to supply power even when voltage fluctuates.

It also has a function to respond to changes in grid voltage and frequency and to maintain power supply using grid-forming technology even when electricity supply is unstable.

LG Energy Solution plans to expand its ESS business for AI data centres using its North American production base. It operates 5 ESS production sites in North America and produces cells, packs and links locally.

The company plans to expand North American ESS production capacity to more than 50 GWh by the end of this year. It is also running a business system that supports everything from design to operation and maintenance through Vertaq, its ESS system integration subsidiary in the United States.

Orders linked to global AI data centre power demand are also continuing. LG Energy Solution signed a contract in May to supply 6 GWh of ESS batteries to U.S. utility company DTE Energy, and in July agreed to supply batteries to a solar and ESS project by Google and Cypress Creek Energy.

BloombergNEF forecasts U.S. data centre power consumption will rise to 391 TWh in 2030 from 180 TWh last year.

Kang Chang-beom (강창범), executive vice president of LG Energy Solution's ESS battery business division, said joining DSX Ready as a partner showed it had proven the competitiveness of products optimised for AI data centres. He said the company would expand its AI infrastructure business based on local production capability and technology.
