KakaoPay tested a two-way “agentic payment” technology in which an AI agent uses stablecoins to buy goods or data and settles payments to sellers. It is seeking to build a payment infrastructure that goes beyond buyer-centric payments to connect with sellers’ monetisation of data and APIs.

KakaoPay said on Sept. 15 it completed a proof-of-concept (PoC) for agentic payment technology covering both purchasing and sales.

Agentic payment is a method in which users set conditions such as purchase authority and payment limits for an AI agent, and the agent determines necessary products, services and data within that scope and makes payments.

In the test, KakaoPay implemented technology that links an AI agent with its digital asset wallet and payment infrastructure to enable payments in stablecoins. It validated the entire payment process, from wallet linkage to payment and settlement, balance, limit and policy management, and communication with the AI agent.

Users can check the AI agent’s payment history, limits and where it is used in the KakaoPay app.

It also developed functions on the seller side. Businesses that hold web resources such as APIs or data can receive requests from external AI agents, sell the information and settle payments in stablecoins.

It also linked sellers’ business wallets and business accounts. A dedicated dashboard allows them to check sales details, and provides wallets, payment processing and blockchain-based settlement in a single structure.

Based on the technology test, KakaoPay plans to strengthen user protection measures in line with domestic digital asset regulatory policy and push for commercialisation of agentic payment technology and external distribution.

Kakao Group previously tested wallet technology that can hold digital assets such as stablecoins in the KakaoPay payment environment, and KakaoBank is also testing related technology based on banking systems.

A KakaoPay official said it established the technical foundation for “two-way agentic commerce” that connects both buyers and sellers in transactions between AI agents. The official said it would continue building related infrastructure to support a new transaction market using digital assets such as stablecoins.
