BlackRock\'s IBIT outpaces Vanguard\'s S&P 500 ETF in cumulative return

BlackRock\'s spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has surpassed Vanguard\'s flagship S&P 500 ETF in cumulative returns since its launch in January 2024. Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas said IBIT slightly outperformed over the comparison period. Bloomberg data show IBIT is up 71% since inception, while Vanguard\'s S&P 500 ETF gained 66% in total return. IBIT\'s assets stand at $61.4 billion, versus about $11.0 billion for Fidelity\'s fund.

BlackRock urges 1 to 2 percent bitcoin allocation, reaffirms portfolio benefits despite 50 percent drop

An analysis says adding a small amount of bitcoin can improve the risk-adjusted performance of a traditional investment portfolio even after bitcoin fell about 50 percent from its peak. BlackRock compared a 60/40 stock-bond portfolio with portfolios that include 1 percent and 2 percent bitcoin using 10 years of rolling data through May 29, 2026. Returns and Sharpe ratios rose while volatility and maximum drawdowns changed only slightly, it found.

BlackRock is focusing on bitcoin and ether rather than entering the spot XRP exchange-traded fund market, a move some in the industry say could be read as a market call that other cryptocurrencies lack sufficient investment value. Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, called the strategy risky but said he still expects BlackRock to expand its lineup of spot crypto ETFs. Data showed large outflows from Coinbase Prime into wallets linked to BlackRock’s IBIT, ETHA and ETHB products.
