KOSPI hits 8,000 as debate returns over reviving financial investment income tax
With the KOSPI heating up and breaking above 8,000 intraday, debate has resurfaced over reviving South Korea’s financial investment income tax. Labour and civic groups call for normalising taxation of financial income, arguing capital income is insufficiently taxed compared with wages. President Lee Jae-myung has also raised the need to reform securities transaction and capital gains taxes. Opponents warn the tax could hurt sentiment and spur outflows, while the government has not formalised reintroduction.

Why the KOSPI swung after breaking 8,000 intraday for first time
South Korea\'s KOSPI briefly topped 8,000 for the first time but ended sharply lower as foreign investors and institutions stepped up selling. The sell-off came amid concerns over rising U.S. rates, geopolitical uncertainty and foreign outflows, triggering a program trading curb in afternoon trade. The KOSPI fell 6.12 percent, while the Kosdaq dropped 5.14 percent. Analysts largely viewed the move as profit-taking after a short-term surge.

Samsung Securities launches foreigner integrated account service with IBKR
Samsung Securities said on Monday it is launching a “foreigner integrated account” service with Interactive Brokers that allows foreign investors to trade South Korean stocks through local securities firms. The scheme supports overseas investors who do not open accounts directly with domestic brokers. Samsung Securities said foreign participation in South Korean shares has faced higher barriers, including complex account-opening procedures. It said the service was promoted in line with government policies to improve access.
