ECB warns stablecoin spread could trigger bank runs, undermine monetary policy, urges faster digital euro

The European Central Bank warned that the spread of stablecoins could undermine financial stability and reinforce a U.S. dollar-centred international monetary order. Hackett said the term was coined when extreme volatility dominated markets, but stability is now a baseline rather than the defining feature. Developer and brand adviser John Palmer said the name feels like a bug and stablecoins deserve a new identity. Hackett said alternatives are awkward and early terms often endure.
