The European Central Bank said it will design its planned digital euro app to a higher standard than European Union accessibility requirements. Cointelegraph reported on July 31 that the app will be offered as one of several routes for users to access basic digital euro services.
The plan includes improved visual elements, full keyboard navigation, screen reader support, timeout warnings, plain language, error prevention and reduced-motion settings. The ECB said the app will exceed the requirements of the European Accessibility Act.
The digital euro app plan was first presented in a progress report released in October 2025. The ECB said at the time the app would serve as an alternative when banking apps do not work, and would be designed so users would not need to learn a new app again if they switch payment service providers.
The ECB selected 36 payment service providers on July 14. They will take part in a 12-month pilot starting in the second half of 2027 to test the system before an issuance decision.
