Chinese AI firms shift from open source to closed models, prioritising profitability
Chinese AI companies such as Alibaba and Zhipu AI are increasingly withholding their latest models from open-source release and focusing on monetisation through cloud platforms, the South China Morning Post reported. Alibaba launched three proprietary models this week that are accessible only via its cloud and chatbot site. The company cited relatively weaker developer interest in its Omni series on Hugging Face. Zhipu AI said customers are shifting from self-hosting to cloud APIs.

The centre of AI competition is shifting from model performance to token pricing, and China is starting to pull ahead, a survey shows. OpenRouter data cited by the Financial Times show that from February, token consumption by Chinese AI models such as DeepSeek and MiniMax surpassed that of U.S. rivals. Chinese firms charge far less per 1 million output tokens than competitors such as Anthropic\'s Claude Sonnet 4.5.

TheVentures partners with China\'s Z.ai to jointly identify promising AI startups
TheVentures, an early-stage venture capital firm, said on Tuesday it signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong-listed Chinese AI startup Z.ai to support the global AI startup ecosystem. The deal aims to combine the two companies’ acceleration systems and technical infrastructure to jointly identify and nurture promising AI startups. The partners plan to provide access to Z.ai infrastructure and APIs, run scale-up mentoring, and build a community for technical exchange.
