AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness invested $400 million in chip startup Source Foundry. TechCrunch reported on Aug. 9 that Source Foundry was founded by Stanford researchers and aims to make semiconductor manufacturing faster and cheaper. Situational Awareness has continued making large investments despite recent losses. It sold most of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel last month but kept its stake in Anthropic. Assets under management reportedly fell from $20 billion to $10 billion.

ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming rules out distillation for AI model training
ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming (장이밍) has made clear the company will not use “distillation” techniques to train its AI models, even if it costs more. He has recently become directly involved in the company’s AI strategy, reviewing development progress and hiring. The stance comes as the United States steps up scrutiny of Chinese firms’ use of distillation. ByteDance’s approach is tied to development of its video generation model, Seedance, and large investments in GPUs, data and talent.

Skylo speeds push into South Korea with satellite links for regular smartphones
Skylo Technologies is accelerating its push into South Korea with a service that allows regular smartphones to use satellite communications in areas without mobile coverage. The company says its direct-to-device technology connects phones to satellites without dedicated terminals or external antennas and works with mobile standards. Skylo said it operates commercial services in 37 countries and had connected about 7 million devices as of June 2025.
