Nvidia joins Japan\'s FRONTIA national physical AI project
Japan\'s government is working with Nvidia to build national artificial intelligence infrastructure aimed at strengthening competitiveness in physical AI used in robotics and industrial automation. Up to 1 trillion yen is expected to be invested over the next five years. The economy ministry will support cooperation between consortium NOESTRA and Nvidia on the FRONTIA project, which runs until 2030 and will use Nvidia\'s Vera Rubin platform infrastructure.

Nvidia has forged a cooperation framework in Japan spanning national AI infrastructure, robotics and automobiles, linking the government and key manufacturers. CEO Jensen Huang visited Tokyo to confirm multiple projects connected to Japan’s physical AI strategy, including support for the state-backed AI developer Noetra. Nvidia plans to build a Vera Rubin AI Factory by 2028. Japan to inject about 6 trillion won into Rapidus in bid to revive chip industry
Japan will provide Rapidus with an additional 631.5 billion yen in commissioned research and development funding for fiscal 2026, aimed at advancing the company’s plan to begin mass production in the second half of fiscal 2027. Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa unveiled the plan at Rapidus’ plant in Chitose, Hokkaido. The new funds will be used for prototype performance evaluation and yield improvements. Cumulative government support will rise to 2.35 trillion yen, with separate capital injections also planned.
