Rubidium supply crunch looms after semiconductors as quantum computing spreads
Rubidium is emerging as a key strategic resource in the quantum-computing era, with demand expected to expand as neutral-atom quantum computers move toward commercialisation. Because rubidium is mostly produced as a byproduct of processing other minerals, supply is limited. Market Research Future forecasts global demand will rise from 7.44 tonnes in 2025 to 11.96 tonnes in 2035. Industry estimates even 50 to 100 commercial quantum computers could require an additional 0.5 to 0.8 tonnes a year.

AWS aims to offer fault-tolerant quantum computer cloud service with QuEra Computing
Amazon Web Services said on Sunday it is expanding cooperation with neutral-atom quantum computing firm QuEra Computing and plans to offer the fault-tolerant quantum computer Libra via Amazon Braket by 2028. AWS said quantum computers face inherent limits because qubits are prone to errors from small environmental changes, and fault-tolerant computing uses error correction to overcome them. It said Libra is designed to run more than 1 million quantum operations on hundreds of logical qubits.

The companies aim to introduce an error-corrected quantum system to the AWS cloud within the next two years and unveil a next-generation quantum computer supporting large-scale logical qubits by 2028. The collaboration focuses on error-control technology, using QuEra’s neutral-atom approach and expanding AWS’s multi-architecture platform strategy.
