BAMTT approves enforcement decree for Information Network Act; up to 1 billion won fine for spreading fake news
South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Communications Commission (BAMTT) approved revisions to the enforcement decree of the Information and Communications Network Act and a related public notice to prevent the spread of false and manipulated information and strengthen digital platforms\' social responsibility. The rules take effect on July 7. The scope covers user-to-user information intermediary services such as SNS and online communities, while search services and open marketplaces were excluded from the final draft. The decree also specifies criteria for punitive damages and administrative fines.

AI use spreads ahead of June 3 local elections, from polls to vote count broadcasts
Generative AI is being used more widely than ever ahead of the June 3 nationwide local elections in South Korea, including in opinion polling, broadcasters’ real-time vote count analysis and explanations, and deepfake monitoring. SBS and OpenAI Korea plan to use GPT-5.5 for real-time natural-language commentary during an election night broadcast. AI-based “silicon sampling” is also drawing attention in polling, while authorities are deploying AI models to detect deepfakes.

Election Broadcast Deliberation Committee elects Lee Jong-su as chair, Won Jun-hee as vice chair
The Election Broadcast Deliberation Committee for South Korea\'s 9th nationwide local elections held its first meeting on Tuesday at the Broadcasting Hall in Mok-dong and elected Lee Jong-su as chair and Won Jun-hee as vice chair. It also adopted and published guidance for broadcasters to ensure fair election coverage, including compliance with reporting standards for election polls, limits on candidates\' appearances and maintaining fairness and objectivity.
