Korea Fintech Industry Association, FSS check payment risks and internal controls at electronic financial firms

The Korea Fintech Industry Association and South Korea\'s Financial Supervisory Service held a seminar in Seoul to review internal control duties for electronic financial firms, including oversight of sub-payment gateway operators, financial soundness and reporting of transaction terms. PIPC boosts sanction effectiveness, gains momentum in shift to prevention-focused system

South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission said it shared key first-half results and plans, highlighting stronger economic penalties tied to major personal data leaks. It said total fines rose to 608.4 billion won in the first half of 2026 from 167.8 billion won in 2025 and 61.2 billion won in 2024, naming firms and institutions that received major sanctions. The commission also outlined new punitive fine rules and expanded preventive inspections and mydata download rights.

PIPC discusses ways to expand use of regional AI data

South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission visited Gwangju Techno Park and the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Project Group on Wednesday and held a meeting with local companies, institutions and researchers in AI medical and healthcare fields in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region. Participants proposed simplifying procedures for combining and processing pseudonymised data, establishing a new support centre and expanding consulting for local organisations. Chairperson Song Kyung-hee said the commission would support innovation while securing public trust in privacy protection.
