Battery charged at 10-metre depth as \'underwater solar\' moves closer to reality
Researchers have developed perovskite solar cells that can generate electricity at depths of about 10 metres by improving durability and tuning light absorption to underwater wavelengths. The team tested a wide-bandgap device in the lab and in the South China Sea, reporting 34.71 percent efficiency under simulated 10-metre conditions and 16.79 percent under standard sunlight. A sealed module showed little degradation after about 1,160 hours underwater, with a T80 life estimated at 48,094 hours. Field tests charged a battery at 2, 6 and 10 metres.
