Nvidia to invest $3.5 billion in MediaTek, reshaping AI chip market
Nvidia has bought $3.5 billion worth of convertible bonds issued by Taiwan chipmaker MediaTek, expanding cooperation on AI semiconductors. MediaTek plans to adopt Nvidia\'s NVLink Fusion to link customised AI chips to Nvidia-based data centres. The companies said they will broaden collaboration in AI infrastructure, local AI computing and automotive. MediaTek is targeting $2.0 billion in revenue from its data-centre chip design business this year.

Limits on expanding high-bandwidth memory are pushing the memory industry to focus on improving resource utilisation in AI servers rather than boosting bandwidth alone. With only about 50 to 60 percent of installed server memory used for computation, companies are pursuing technologies to pool and reallocate capacity, including CXL, PIM and high-bandwidth flash. Supply constraints and rising costs reinforce the shift toward a tiered memory approach combining different memory types.

Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March and said it has no plans for successor hardware, ending its highest-performance desktop line-up. TechRadar reported the workstation lost market appeal as the Mac Studio gained ground and AI data centre demand pushed up component prices. The Mac Pro, first unveiled in 2006, targeted a niche of users needing high performance. Long gaps in updates, limited remaining expandability and a $6,999 starting price further eroded its position.
