PIPC says 2027 budget set at 99.6 billion won for prevention system, AI safety use
South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission said on Thursday its proposed 2027 budget totals 99.6 billion won, up 37 percent from this year. It said the money will focus on key projects including expanding prevention systems, safe use of AX innovation, strengthening public rights and responding to personal data breaches and leaks. The plan includes new funding for pre-emptive prevention systems, cross-border data transfers and support for litigation and investigations.

South Korea will create a special account in 2027 to manage semiconductor support spending as a separate funding pool, with a total size of 2.6 trillion won. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will oversee 2.1 trillion won of that amount. The ministry proposed a record 2027 budget of 13.26 trillion won, up 40.5 percent from 2026, and said non-R&D spending drove the increase. It also set new spending for AI data centres.

Ruling party, government push AI and three mega-project investment, set up special semiconductor fund
South Korea\'s government and the Democratic Party held budget talks for the 2027 spending plan and selected five priority investment areas, including AI and three mega projects. They plan to create a special semiconductor account to support related programmes and expand support for frontier-level AI computing infrastructure, including supplying 10,000 GPUs. Investment will also increase in space and bio, youth support and regional growth measures. They also plan a future-response fund tied to higher tax revenue.
