GM begins producing EV motor permanent magnets in U.S. amid supply chain shake-up

General Motors is accelerating efforts to build a U.S. supply chain for key electric-vehicle components. Permanent magnets used in EV motors have begun to be produced in Texas, and GM is testing and validating them for use in its motors. The work stems from a long-term collaboration with MP Materials that spans rare earth mining and refining through magnet production and motor development. MSIT launches K-Moonshot rare earth industry-academia-research council

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT launched a K-Moonshot rare earth industry-academia-research council in Seoul on Wednesday to strengthen supply-chain capabilities for materials heavily dependent on China. The ministry is pursuing a K-Moonshot programme that combines AI and science and technology. It plans work from 2027 led by three state research institutes to develop permanent magnet processes that avoid heavy rare earths, sharply cut light rare earth use and recover rare earths from waste magnets.

Tesla unveils rare earth-free Cybercab motor; doubts remain over supply chain shift

Tesla said it has fitted Cybercab with a new electric vehicle motor that does not use rare earths. The motor is 18 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its existing high-performance drive unit, and is more efficient, according to Electrek. The company has not disclosed the magnet material used. While the change could matter for supply chains amid tighter Chinese export controls on rare-earth processing, broader adoption beyond Cybercab remains uncertain.
