Hwang Jeong-a says startups at state-funded research institutes up 120 percent, urgent to fix follow-up rules

Startups launched by government-funded research institutes more than doubled in the first half of this year from a year earlier, data submitted to lawmaker Hwang Jeong-a showed. NST-affiliated institutes recorded 11 startups, up 120 percent from 5 a year earlier. From January to September, startup screenings rose to 30 and approvals to 26. Hwang urged Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon to swiftly update guidelines even before the law takes effect.

Four NST government-funded research institutes still recognise only 1 year of parental leave

Four government-funded research institutes under the National Research Council of Science and Technology have not revised internal rules despite an expansion of statutory parental leave, according to lawmaker Hwang Jung-a. The institutes include KIST, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, the Korea Institute of Energy Research and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Some rules still count only 1 year, and KIST retains a clause limiting men’s leave recognition. The institutes said they will amend rules and apply changes retroactively.

NRK security tech lab staff played StarCraft at work; discipline limited to reprimands

Five employees at South Korea’s National Security Research Institute logged into the StarCraft Battle.net server during working hours from September to December 2024, documents showed. Some recorded more than 90 hours of access, including sessions lasting up to 8 hours 53 minutes in a day. The institute issued reprimands to all five, deducted paid leave for the time, and cut pay where leave was insufficient. It also tightened network controls and monitoring.
