Korea to introduce post office home pickup for used mobile phones this year

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT postal service plans to build a home-collection system for used mobile phones using a post office pickup parcel service. It signed an agreement with the Ministry of Climate Energy and Environment and E-Soonhwan Governance to set up a safe collection system. The climate ministry will provide administrative support and promotion, while E-Soonhwan Governance will run collection and recycling through its Nanum Phone platform. The service is due to start this year.

Government to overhaul evaluation of national R&D projects

South Korea will overhaul how it evaluates national research and development projects to focus on challenge-driven outcomes and will fully adopt the Moving Target system from next year, allowing researchers to change targets during projects. The Ministry of Science and ICT said it notified related ministries of its 2026 administrative reform plan. The government will create a new evaluation system by October, ease fund-use rules, add a personal cap for research allowances, standardise settlement criteria and strengthen oversight of overseas spending.

Honam semiconductor, AI data center projects exempted from pre-feasibility review as three mega projects gain pace

South Korea will exempt pre-feasibility reviews for infrastructure projects to build a Honam semiconductor cluster and expand AI data centers. President Lee Jae-myung approved the measures at a cabinet meeting on Aug. 25, along with multiple bills and decrees. The exemptions cover power and water infrastructure for semiconductor industrial complexes and related support projects. Additional plans include support for a southwest semiconductor base, AI data center clusters, AI construction robots and physical AI trials for small manufacturers.
