Korea media communications review committee appoints 5 members to defamation dispute mediation panel
The Korea Broadcasting, Media and Communications Review Committee said on April 28 it appointed five experts, including Kim Jun-hyeon, to its defamation dispute mediation panel. The panel is an alternative dispute resolution body that mediates conflicts over online information that infringes others’ rights, such as privacy violations or defamation. Users can apply for mediation through the committee’s internet damage relief website and may request user information when identification is difficult.

Ko Kwang-heon takes office as Bangmisim chair, pledges normalisation and trust recovery
The Broadcasting Media and Communications Review Committee said on Wednesday it held an inauguration ceremony for its new chair, Ko Kwang-heon, in Seoul. Ko said normalising the committee and restoring public trust would be his top priorities. He pledged to review past problems objectively, identify responsibility and causes, and correct distorted systems and procedures. He also promised independent deliberations, transparent disclosure of results and personnel reform, as well as faster responses to illegal content.

Election broadcast review panel formation may unlock normalising broadcast media committees
With the June 3 local elections approaching, South Korea is under pressure to quickly form the Election Broadcasting Review Panel. The panel must be set up by the Broadcast Media and Communications Review Committee, which cannot operate normally because National Assembly-appointed members have not been named. The Broadcast Media and Communications Commission is also short of its legal quorum. Some see the Assembly handling appointments to both bodies as a package.
