Automakers expand subscription-based self-driving features
Automakers are rapidly expanding monthly subscription sales of driver-assistance features to generate recurring software revenue after vehicle delivery. Tesla offers an FSD subscription for $99 a month, while Rivian, GM, Ford and others are introducing similar pricing tiers. Consumer pushback is rising as buyers face additional fees after paying for vehicles, and many services remain Level 2 assistance. GM reported $235 million in 2025 Super Cruise subscription revenue and expects growth.

Tesla to make its own semiconductors for EVs and space
Tesla is moving ahead with plans to build a massive AI infrastructure dubbed the Terafab project, with the possibility of a capital increase being discussed. Elon Musk outlined a blueprint mobilising SpaceX, xAI and other key companies. The company also faces uncertainty from delays in European approval for FSD while teasing a next-generation Roadster and other patents. Rival automakers and robotaxi developers are stepping up competition, amid shifting EV market dynamics and rising oil prices.

Rivian teams up with Uber to enter self-driving market, develop R2 SUV-based robotaxi
Rivian has partnered with Uber to develop a robotaxi based on the R2 SUV, a deal valued at up to $1.25 billion. Uber will make an initial $300 million investment in Rivian and plans to introduce up to 50,000 robotaxis by 2030. Uber plans to launch the R2 robotaxi in San Francisco and Miami in 2028 and expand to 25 cities in North America and Europe by 2031.
