South Korea launches rapid-response R&D on cybersecurity, infectious diseases and more
The South Korean government is launching research and development to respond quickly to national emergencies such as cyberattacks, personal data leaks, new infectious diseases and chemical leaks. The Ministry of Science and ICT said it selected four projects for its cross-ministry rapid-response R&D programme and has begun work. Projects include cybersecurity vulnerability verification and response, early-stage analysis of large data breaches, AI-based vaccine and treatment candidate discovery and rapid diagnostics, and chemical accident prediction using sensors and IT.

Health data transmitter scope expanded to 337 general hospitals
South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission said on March 18 it will issue a revised notice expanding the scope of health and medical sector data transmitters. The revision adds 337 general hospitals under Article 3-3 of the Medical Service Act to the existing 50 institutions, bringing the total to 387. The commission plans a phased rollout starting with general hospitals connected to the Health Information Highway system.

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission will strengthen preventive management starting with public agencies that process large amounts of key personal data such as resident registration numbers. It set principles of risk-based management, evidence-based inspections and outcome-linked incentives to encourage voluntary improvement. The commission will expand public-sector intensive management systems to 387 and conduct emergency inspections through March, focusing on security patches, strong authentication, de-identification and encryption practices.
