South Korea to raise ICT R&D budget to 2 trillion won, focus on three mega projects
South Korea will invest a record 2.08 trillion won in ICT research and development next year, with 662.1 billion won focused on three mega projects: physical AI, AI semiconductors and AI data centres. The science ministry held a workshop in Seoul on planning new 2027 tasks, aiming to strengthen links between project design and results. It will also introduce an AI agent for research administration and roll it out from 2027.

IITP to boost full-stack linking AI semiconductors and physical AI to respond to AX 2.0
South Korea\'s Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) is strengthening full-stack competitiveness by linking AI semiconductors, physical AI and next-generation networks, it said. It aims to respond to the spread of agentic AI and physical AI in industrial sites in the AX 2.0 era. IITP outlined R&D and talent development plans, including support for AI semiconductor firms, 6G and satellite communications, cybersecurity initiatives, defence AX programmes and expanded AI training.

Park Se-woong appointed 11th president of ETRI, highlights AI, DX vision
Park Se-woong (박세웅), a professor at Seoul National University, has taken office as the 11th president of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). ETRI held an inauguration ceremony on May 20 at its auditorium. Park presented a vision of opening a warm world through AI and digital transformation innovation. He said ETRI will serve as a full-cycle AI and ICT R&D platform and drive sustainable growth based on human-centred values.
