Is technology like salt on the hearth?
A disaster in Nepal on Aug. 26, 2026, involving floods and landslides was triggered by collapsing glaciers and was also described as a foreseen result of global warming. Disaster news spreads quickly, but conditions just before such events often fuel speculation rather than data analysis. The author argues that unused technical ideas are like salt left on a hearth. He urges combining drones, IoT, cloud and AI to collect data, model risks and enable early evacuation and sustained monitoring in cooperation with Nepal.
