AI models are U.S.-led, adoption shifts to Europe: will global market balance change
Europe lags far behind the United States in investment in AI infrastructure and foundation models, but is rapidly building competitiveness in industry-specific AI application software, an analysis found. McKinsey and European Software Network Boardwave said Europe is emerging as a key hub for AI applications. Europe accounted for 10 percent of global AI investment from January 2025 to June 2026, but its share in AI application investment rose to 44 percent in the first half of this year.

Spotify is maintaining its dominance in the music streaming market despite controversy over artist compensation, management’s defence-industry investment and its AI policies. It has 293 million paid subscribers and 761 million monthly active users including free users. Disputes centre on payout structures, handling of AI-generated music and plans to expand AI features, including tools to create playlists and, under a Universal licence, AI-made remixes and covers offered as a premium add-on.

NATO, UK and Germany ramp up investment in drones and autonomous systems
Europe is rapidly shifting its security investment toward drones and autonomous systems. In recent weeks, NATO set out plans to strengthen counter-drone capabilities, while the UK earmarked billions of pounds for a drone programme and Germany moved to expand drone procurement for Ukraine. Companies tied to drone software and battlefield networks are also drawing attention. Funding has followed the trend, including a new valuation for defence technology startup Helsing.
