AMD to ship first rack-scale AI system Helios by year-end; Microsoft joins as new customer
AMD will begin shipping its first rack-scale artificial intelligence system, Helios, to customers from late this year, CNBC reported on July 20. Microsoft is joining as a new customer and plans to use Helios in its data centres for frontier model inference, customer AI workloads and Azure AI services. AMD said Helios integrates GPUs, CPUs, networking and software, and will use MI400-series GPUs and EPYC CPUs.

Solid-state battery electric aircraft completes first crewed test flight
An electric aircraft equipped with solid-state batteries has successfully completed a crewed test flight, a step seen as supporting potential commercial use beyond electric cars. Helios Horizon said the June 6 flight carried a chief test pilot and focused on weight distribution and handling rather than range. The aircraft flew below about 500 feet at up to 60 mph. The company said its battery pack cost about $30,000 and used commercially available cells.

Qualcomm shares up 75 percent in a month, emerges as a leader in physical AI
Qualcomm shares jumped 12 percent on May 22 to a record high and are up 75 percent over the past month, CNBC reported. The move reflects Wall Street’s recognition of Qualcomm’s position in the physical AI boom, it said. CNBC said Qualcomm is cementing its role as a key chip supplier for connected devices such as smart glasses, cars and robots. It also cited partnerships and contracts spanning automakers, and plans for data-centre chips.
