Realta Fusion lights bulb with electricity recovered directly from nuclear fusion reaction

Wisconsin-based nuclear fusion startup Realta Fusion said it succeeded in recovering electricity directly from a fusion reaction and lighting bulbs. The company said it publicly demonstrated the method at its WHAM fusion test device and claimed it was the first private company to do so. Realta said it converted energy from alpha particles into electricity, producing about 100 volts and several amperes, and estimates direct conversion efficiency at about 90 percent.

Investment appetite in the fusion energy industry continues, but divisions are sharpening over when companies should go public and how they should pursue monetisation. Fusion startups raised about $1.6 billion in the past 12 months, but opinions differ on whether firms should list before reaching the “scientific breakeven” milestone. Debate has centred on TAE Technologies and General Fusion, which have unveiled merger-based listing plans.

Ku Hyuk-chae discusses R&D regulatory rationalisation with young researchers

Ku Hyuk-chae (구혁채), first vice minister of science at the Ministry of Science and ICT, held a meeting with researchers at Chung-Ang University on April 15 to discuss measures to rationalise on-the-ground research and development regulations. The visit marked the 14th step in the “Project Empathy 118” initiative. Participants discussed difficulties involving administrative forms, research fund use and settlement, fund disbursement and software subscriptions.
