Rising costs raise questions over big model-centric AI landscape
As corporate spending on AI rises rapidly, the big model-centric structure of the AI industry is showing signs of change. Developers have kept inference costs relatively low using invested funds, allowing companies to use advanced models below cost. With AI adoption spreading, more companies say costs are becoming a burden. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong forecast most work will shift to much cheaper models, a shift that could affect profitability at major AI firms.

Deepclaude keeps Claude Code experience, cuts model costs to one-seventeenth
An open-source tool called Deepclaude has emerged that keeps the autonomous coding-agent experience of Claude Code while sharply reducing model usage costs. Developers can retain the same interface and workflow and switch only the underlying model to alternatives such as DeepSeek V4 Pro or OpenRouter. The tool supports key developer functions, though it does not fully match the original environment. It also enables real-time backend switching during a session and highlights large pricing gaps between providers.

Cursor unveils new AI coding model Composer 2 based on Moonshot AI\'s Kimi
AI coding company Cursor launched a new model, Composer 2, promoting it as delivering frontier-level coding intelligence. It later emerged that the model partially used an open-source AI model provided by Chinese AI company Moonshot AI, Kimi. A user on X alleged Composer 2 was essentially Kimi 2.5 with reinforcement learning added, and a Cursor executive acknowledged it started from an open-source base. Cursor said only about a quarter of final compute came from Kimi 2.5.
