U.S. government moves to develop safety performance standards for self-driving cars
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun work on federal performance standards to evaluate the safety of self-driving vehicles, citing the need for common benchmarks for real-world operation. It launched the ASCEND consortium with SAE International to speed development of data-driven measures. NHTSA says existing federal motor vehicle safety standards do not fully cover vehicles without traditional controls. Aptera starts countdown to produce 40 solar three-wheeled EVs in U.S.
U.S. electric vehicle startup Aptera has begun preparations for initial mass production of a three-wheeled EV equipped with solar panels. After securing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certification for its production model, it completed orders for parts needed to build the first vehicles for customer delivery. Aptera aims to produce 40 units, with body and chassis parts due to arrive at its California plant in October.
