AI data centre expansion could drive surge in carbon emissions
U.S. power-sector carbon dioxide emissions could rise 42 percent in 2030 from 2025 levels if fossil-fuel generation expands to support more AI data centres, a projection showed. Sierra Club estimated annual emissions from electricity production could reach about 2.1 billion tonnes in 2030 if planned AI data centres and related power plants are built as scheduled. The estimate is based on project plans and supply methods, not actual emissions.

U.S. fossil power plans surge, new capacity share expands from 5 to 30 percent
Plans to build fossil-fuel power plants in the United States, led by natural gas, are rising at the fastest pace in more than a decade, an analysis said. A report by the Environmental Defense Fund and Atlas Public Policy found fossil fuels account for about 30 percent of planned new generating capacity as of the second quarter of 2026, up from 5 percent of capacity actually installed in 2024. Renewables remain cheaper on average, but policy and demand shifts are driving the change.

Nvidia to power AI data centres with waves, develops next-generation wave energy
As power shortages emerge as a global challenge amid expanding AI infrastructure, Nvidia’s AI technology is being used in renewable energy that converts ocean waves into electricity. Wave energy company Eco Wave Power is developing a next-generation wave power system using Nvidia AI infrastructure and Omniverse digital-twin technology. It plans to install equipment on existing ports and breakwaters near high-demand areas, simulate designs in advance and improve reliability by moving key hardware onshore.
