Apple unveils AI Siri after 2 years, bets on conversational AI to take on ChatGPT and Claude
Apple on June 8 unveiled a next-generation AI voice assistant Siri at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, developed in cooperation with Google. TechCrunch reported it marked a renewed attempt two years after Apple failed to deliver on a promise to launch Smart Siri. The new Siri becomes a conversational AI platform and will also be released as a standalone app, with new design, writing and productivity features, plus usage limits and regional constraints.

Mike Rockwell, who is leading Apple’s Siri revamp, is weighing whether to leave the company or reduce his role, a report said. Bloomberg, cited by 9to5Mac, said Rockwell has recently considered options for his future at Apple. The discussion comes as Apple reshuffles management and rebuilds its AI organisation after CEO Tim Cook lost trust in the prior structure led by John Giannandrea. Apple’s AI strategy is now overseen by software chief Craig Federighi.

Apple AI chief John Giannandrea to leave, did Siri play a role
Apple Senior Vice President John Giannandrea, who has overseen the company’s machine learning and AI strategy, is expected to leave the company this week, PhoneArena reported. His departure is linked to the vesting of Apple stock awards scheduled for April 15, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote. Gurman said Apple Intelligence’s weak performance was not necessarily Giannandrea’s fault, citing limits on authority for external hires and an initially cautious stance on AI within Apple’s leadership.
